Wrestling Soars After Securing Win Over South Plainfield

In one of the biggest home wrestling matches in the recent history of the Saint Joseph High School program, the No. 12 Falcons took down conference rival No. 20 South Plainfield, 34-23, on Wednesday inside the Maglio Gymnasium.

 

Saint Joe’s edged the Tigers in overall match results by taking home eight individual wins, including three pins from Brian Christie, Jake Tulli and Giovanni Alejandro.

 

Following Alejandro’s 46 second pin over South Plainfield’s Daniel Gonzalez-Ross to give the Falcons a late 31-16 advantage, Saint Joe’s iced the match by avoiding pins in the final bouts.

 

After losing the first match of the night (165 pound bout where South Plainfield’s Justus Niemeyer edged Sebastian Blumberg, 3-0), the Falcons were victorious in four of the next five bouts, including two pins to take a 19-6 lead. 

 

South Plainfield cut the lead to 19-12 after John Whitacre was pinned in the second period. However, the Saint Joe’s recovered by winning three of the next four bouts. The run was capped by Alejandro’s opening minute pin of Daniel Gonzalez-Ross and resulted in a boisterous roar from the “standing room only” crowd. 

 

The Falcons moved to 3-0 on the year, with matches against Sayreville (January 11) and Monroe (January 13) on the horizon.
