Two Saint Joseph High School seniors were recognized as semifinalists in the 2024-2025 National Merit Scholarship program, while four other students were honored as National Merit commended students.

Elikem Amenuvor ‘25 and Ronan Pell ‘25 were named semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. The awards are based on PSAT/NMSQT testing, with roughly 16,000 students annually receiving the semifinalist designation.

“I am beyond honored to be named a National Merit Semifinalist,” Pell said. “It is a culmination of hours of hard work and renews my motivation to pursue future opportunities and honors.”

Amenuvor and Pell are now in the mix for one of approximately 7,100 National Merit Scholarships that will be awarded in the spring. About 95 percent of the semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and about half of the Finalists will win a scholarship and earn the Merit Scholar title, according to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

Four additional students were named Commended Students in the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program: Michael Armao ‘25, Stephen Horan ‘25, Devraj Patel ‘25 and Gurkeerat Singh ‘25.

“We’re thrilled to celebrate our students and recognize them for the great work they’ve been doing. We’re proud of their strong academic performance in the classroom and on College Board assessments like the PSAT/NMSQT ® , PSAT ™ 10, and AP ® Exams,” Saint Joseph High School Principal Anne Rivera said. “There’s so much that makes our students unique, and this honor reinforces their individuality and achievements as assets for their future.”

Each academic year, over 1.5 million high school students participate in the PSAT/NMSQT exam. Of that number, approximately 34,000 students score well enough to qualify as a Commended Student.
