Saint Joseph Soccer Team Defeats South Brunswick to Claim the 2024 GMC Title
Isaiah Mettle '26 & Zachary Beadling '25

PISCATAWAY, NJ– The Saint Joseph Soccer team are champions again!

Led by a penalty shootout goal by Noah Charnecky ‘27 and two penalty saves by Troy Boucher ‘25, the Falcons defeated South Brunswick to win the 2024 Greater Middlesex Conference Championship for the first time since 2010.

The Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the waning seconds of the first half when Mason Atkins ‘26 buried a header off a set piece from Darian Wubbenhorst ‘26.

South Brunswick scored the equalizer in the second half, forcing overtime and eventually a penalty shootout.

The victory avenged an opening day loss to the Vikings.

With a 13-2-1 record, Saint Joe’s cruised through the Greater Middlesex Conference, finishing as the top team in the county.

Led by Boucher, and center-back Zach Smith ‘26, the Falcon's backline kept nine clean sheets, with only seven goals conceded

“I feel like [the defense] contributed to our season because we didn’t let up any goals for almost six games straight,” Smith said. “During the GMC season, we had the best defense in the state, and you can’t lose if you don’t concede goals.”

On top of the breathtaking defense, the Falcons offense was fierce throughout the season, with 32 goals scored. Charnecky and Joseph Marinello’26 led the scoring charge, with seven goals a piece.

With their first GMC championship since 2010, the players and coaching staff believe this title will add to the program's growth in the future.
