Honoring past players is always a memorable way to kick off a new season
Ahead of the Saint Joseph Ice Hockey home opener on December 12, longtime Falcon coach Peter Kolodney hosted the first ever Face off Ring of Excellence event, inducting teammates Daren Helmold ’90, Sean Singleton ‘91, Ryan Carter ‘91, and Shawn Breen ’92 into this prestigious new club.
“We wanted something to recognize the outstanding in our program”, Kolodney, the former head coach said. “This was a way to recognize what players have done for our hockey program.”
Kolodney spearheaded the ice hockey program before handing the reins to Carter ahead of the 2007/2008 season.
“This was the first time that all four of us have stood on the ice together since we were in high school,” Carter said. “It was an amazing feeling to be back there with those guys.”
Helmold was a four-time program MVP and held the single-season goal scoring record, while Singleton currently holds several goaltending records. He was the netminder in the team's first ever Handchen Cup championship. Carter is one of the program's all-time leaders scorers and was the captain for the 1990-1991 team that won the Handchen Cup. To this day, Breen holds the school record with 215 points.
Singleton was quick to give credit for his success to all of his former teammates.
“For me, it was very humbling, I am very honored,” Singleton said. “ The only reason I was here was because of the contributions of Coach Carter, Daren Helmold, and Shawn Breen. This was something not expected, but we will cherish it forever.”
