For the first time in the history of Saint Joe's wrestling, the Falcons will be represented in the NJSIAA Individual Wrestling Championship match at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.
Giovanni Alejandro '23, one of the top wrestlers in New Jersey, defeated Long Branch's Joey Giordano, 5-2, in the 138-pound semifinals on Friday night to advance to the finals on Saturday.
After a scoreless first period, Alejandro picked up an escape point early in the second period to take the lead. He would not give it up.
Starting from the top position for the third period, Alejandro earned two nearfall points midway through the period to go up 3-0.
Following a Giordano escape, Alejandro earned a 2-point takedown with 44 seconds to go, making the score 5-1 and effectively ending the match.
Alejandro will face Delbarton's Tyler Vazquez in the championship bout. Vazquez upset top-seeded Alex Nini (Christian Brothers Academy) by sudden victory in the other semifinal match.
The official start time of the NJSIAA Individual Wrestling Championship matches is scheduled for 4 p.m. The actual time of the 138-pound match will be decided on Saturday afternoon.
