Saint Joe's wrestler Giovanni Alejandro '23 has a chance to make history on Friday night.
Alejandro ‘23 is one victory away from a Championship bout in the 138-pound weight class, earning a spot in the state semifinal on Friday night at 6 p.m.
Alejandro’s semifinal appearance guarantees him a Top 6 medal, the third consecutive year a Falcon wrestler has advanced this far in the NJSIAA Individual Wrestling State Championships. Last year, Nico Calello ‘22, capped a stellar Saint Joe’s career with a sixth place medal in the 120 pound bracket. He also placed third in the 2020-2021 event.
Alejandro will face Long Branch’s Joey Giordano for a spot in the finals, a rematch of the 2022 NJSIAA Region 5 126-pound semifinal. Giordano picked up the victory in their first meeting, a 5-0 decision.
The Saint Joe’s star opened the Individual State Championship meet with a first round pin over Pt. Boro’s Nate Fletcher. In the pre-quarterfinals, Alejandro picked up a 5-1 victory over Warren Hills’ Shawn Redfield. With a spot in the semifinals on the line, Alejandro edged Camden Catholic's Wayne Rold in overtime by a 3-1 decision.
Giordano has rallied for two major decision victories in the first round and pre-quarterfinals of the 2023 tournament, followed by an overtime upset over Raritan’s Zach Reilley.
