Overview:
The Head Varsity Basketball Coach of Saint Joe’s is responsible for the overall vision, strategy and direction of the high school basketball program. A leader with strong integrity both on and off the court, the Head Coach will align the basketball program to reflect the mission of the school, its core values and operate within the tradition of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart. The Head Coach will instill a high level of appreciation for the discipline related to the game of basketball while highlighting the importance of hard work, sportsmanship, and accountability. The ideal candidate will excel at building strong relationships with all stakeholders involved in the basketball program and greater Saint Joe’s community.
Qualifications:

Previous head coaching experience at the high school or collegiate level

Bachelor’s Degree Required
-
Teaching Certificate Preferred
-
CDL license Preferred
-
Ability to work effectively with staff, students and parents; familiarity with NJSIAA rules, regulations, procedures, and policies
-
Ability to obtain First Aid and CPR Certification, along with Youth Protection (VIRTUS) requirements per the Diocese of Metuchen
-
Participation in basketball at the high school, collegiate or professional level(s) preferred
-
Strong oral and written communication skills are required

Ability to communicate effectively with the media, school administration and greater community
-
Connected to the New Jersey basketball community
-
Excellent interpersonal, organizational, leadership and supervisory skills
Performance Responsibilities:
-
Responsible for all matters related to the basketball program including, but not limited to, player personnel, off-season conditioning, scheduling, fundraising, care/maintenance of equipment and uniforms along with supervision of players during practice, games, travel and other team functions

Recruit knowledgeable, principled coaching staff who will set the right example for the players both on and off the court

Directly responsible for developing, evaluating, and producing a depth chart, directing the team during competition, conducting team meetings, and establishing consistent communication with the families of the basketball program

Establish support and notoriety for the program and actively build relationships within the Saint Joseph and New Jersey basketball community and youth coaches
-
Work with coaches of Saint Joe’s Varsity sports to facilitate and encourage well-rounded student-athletes
-
Exhibit enthusiasm and sincere interest in coaching and working with student-athletes while keeping in focus the character development of the young men of the basketball program
-
Use sound, proven methods of coaching and display knowledge and innovation as the game of basketball evolves
-
Ensure that the safety and welfare of the student-athletes is a top priority in the organization and implementation of practice and game situations
-
Clearly communicate with individual players and the team about goals, performance, and progress
-
Develop and maintain a highly competitive environment

Organize, plan, and schedule a year long program of skill and strength development for student-athletes and consistently monitor performance
-
Maintain a high level of academic standards by working with the Athletic, Academic and Guidance Departments regarding the academic success of student-athletes

Communicate and work with athletic trainer and parents involving student-athletes injuries
-
Monitor the safety conditions of the gym or area in which assigned team is conducting workouts, practices, or games
-
Develop and oversee the tryout/evaluation process for the high school program
-
Maintain accurate statistics, records, and results of the season
-
Enforce discipline and sportsmanlike behavior at all times, and establish and oversee penalties for breach of these standards by individual athletes
-
Work closely with the Athletic Department in scheduling games and practices
-
Maintain an accurate inventory of equipment, uniforms, and supplies and update it after every season
-
Inform student-athletes and families of all school-related policies and team rules
-
Ensure compliance with building athletic eligibility policies and work with student-athletes on academic progress
-
Work to actively promote current student-athletes to collegiate athletic opportunities
-
Design and oversee a yearly summer camp for prospective student-athletes (Grades 3-8)
Administrative Responsibilities:
-
Communicate with assistant coaches in regards to roles, duties, and expectations
-
Attend NJSIAA rules interpretation and conference meetings
-
Work with the Athletic Director to enhance the student-athlete experience and raise the money necessary for the program
-
Follow proper budget and purchase order procedures as outlined by Director of Athletics

Maintain and update team and individual records
-
Supervise practice area and locker room when student-athletes are present to ensure safe and proper conditions
-
Maintain cooperative and professional relations with the media regarding team information, statistics, and interviews
-
Engage in professional development activities designed to improve coaching skills, basketball strategies, and basketball techniques
-
Promote and monitor effective individual and team conduct at practice, during games, and in our school and community in an effort to support the expected image and reputation of Saint Joe’s

Publicize team and individual accomplishments to the school’s Communications Department
-
Cooperate with requests for information from the Athletic and Communications office in a timely fashion
-
Present a professional image and provide a positive role model in terms of personal habits, language and conduct
